October 20 is a date when the Rolling Stones’ story refuses to stay in one lane. From sweaty early club appearances and Paris performances to stadium-sized spectacles, Keith Richards’ solo adventures, and a benefit concert that brought him back alongside Mick Jagger, there’s plenty beyond the usual greatest-hits narrative. The day also connects some unexpected dots: Bill Wyman’s session work, the New Barbarians’ rough-and-ready live recordings, and the arrival of Hackney Diamonds, the band’s first studio album without Charlie Watts. Apparently, one calendar date can contain several decades of rock ’n’ roll business—and a few surprises worth revisiting.

October 20, 1973: Release of John Walker’s 7“ single Good Days / Midnight Morning, with Bill Wyman as guest
The tracks were recorded between May and July 1971 at Strawberry Studios in Château d’Hérouville, near Paris, France. Co-produced during the sessions, they feature Wyman, guitarist John Uribe, keyboardist Mike Moram, drummer Paul Francis and brass players Jim Price and Bobby Keys.

Following his acclaimed 1988 debut Talk Is Cheap and the Rolling Stones’ massive Steel Wheels tour, Richards reunited once again with the X-Pensive Winos to create a relaxed, collaborative studio atmosphere, free from unnecessary polish or pretension.

October 20, 2001: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards take the stage together at Madison Square Garden in NYC for the all-star The Concert for New York City performing Salt of the Earth and Miss You. Recorded live on May 5, 1979 at the Capital Centre in Largo, Maryland, Buried Alive: Live in Maryland captures The New Barbarians in concert during their brief existence. The performance took place during the group’s only American tour, an 18-date, rough-edged run that followed the Toronto benefit shows involving Keith Richards, turning a turbulent period into a memorable rock ’n’ roll detour.
