Today in Rolling Stones history: September 2

September 2, 1963: Ken Colyer Jazz Club, London, England
All these scrappy early gigs fueled the S tones’ gritty rise from blues obsessives to rock legends.
Sept. 2, 1970: Olympiastadion, Helsinki, Finland
In 1970, the Rolling Stones were in a weird in-between phase—no official tour, just a handful of shows scattered across Europe. Fresh out of the ’60s chaos, they were broke from bad deals and tax issues, but still pulling huge crowds whenever they showed up. Think of it as the Stones regrouping, catching their breath before unleashing the monster tours that would define the next decade. Rock’s storm was only warming up.

September 2, 1981: Release of 1 2 3 4, Ronnie Wood’s fourth solo album
SIDE A: 1. 1 2 3 4/ 2. Fountain Of Love/ 3. Outlaws/ 4. Redeyes/ 5. Wind Howlin’ Through
SIDE B: 1. Priceless/ 2. She Was Out There/ 3. Down To The Ground/ 4. She Never Told Me
Ronnie Wood’s fourth solo record, 1 2 3 4, is pure Ronnie—loose, groovy, and full of that cheeky swagger he brings to the Stones. It’s not some polished chart-chasing album; it’s him jamming with buddies, mixing rock, funk, and a splash of reggae. You can tell he’s having fun more than trying to prove anything. Critics didn’t rave, but fans of Ronnie’s raw style know the album is a hidden gem worth a spin.
