September 27 has never been an especially quiet date in Rolling Stones history. From early London and Morecambe gigs to Buffalo, Cleveland, Memphis and Barcelona, the calendar keeps finding excuses to bring the band back onto a stage. There’s also a New York party for Love You Live, the release of Bridges to Babylon, and a rather nice Keith Richards connection to Buddy Guy’s Bring ’Em In. Mick Taylor even turns up in an unexpected 1999 project. In other words, September 27 manages to pack several decades of Stones history into one date, because apparently one lifetime of stories wasn’t enough. Here’s what happened.

Bridges to Babylon blends the Stones’ familiar rock and blues foundations with reggae touches and electronic loops, giving the album a distinctly modern edge. That variety reflects a creative tug-of-war within the band. Mick Jagger pushed for a more contemporary sound, embracing newer production ideas and textures, while Keith Richards leaned toward a simpler, more traditional Stones approach. The result is a deliberately eclectic track list, where classic guitar-driven songs sit alongside polished, experimental production without completely abandoning the band’s roots.

Keith about ‘Babylon’ (1997): “Voodoo Lounge was a progression from Steel Wheels and this is a progression from that. We’re pushing boundaries again. We wanted something provocative. We didn’t want a competent Stones record – we wanted a record that people would either love or hate… I feel like it’s the first one where we’ve really been able to push the boundaries since we’ve come back together after the five years of World War III between Mick and me… This is the first one where I think we were really able to push the limits, stylistically. Maybe it was the world touring. You listen to a lot of shit over two and a half years’ time, going from South Africa to Japan: different local music all the time… And what goes in must come out, in one way or another.”

September 27, 1999: Release of Majic Ship’s CD Songwaves Project, with Mick Taylor as guest on one track: Tell Me
The album reunited original Majic Ship members Mike Garrigan and Tommy Nikosey after their 1971 split. Its polished, poppier approach contrasted with the fuzz-driven psychedelia of their 1970 debut. Guests included Cher, Taylor, REO Speedwagon’s Dave Amato, and drummer Ron Wikso.

Bring ’Em In is Buddy Guy’s 13th studio album, produced by drummer Steve Jordan. It blends contemporary electric blues with soul and R&B, featuring mostly covers by artists including Bob Dylan, Otis Redding, Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield. Guy contributes just one original song, What Kind of Woman Is This.
