Today in Rolling Stones history: August 8
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
August 8 has a habit of bringing out the Rolling Stones at their most unpredictable. From a Dutch debut so unruly that furniture became collateral damage to packed stadiums across Europe and America, this date traces a fascinating thread through the band’s touring history. The Stones could turn a routine concert into a story people remembered for decades—and apparently, in 1964, even the chairs had opinions. Across the years, the setlists changed, the venues multiplied, and the scale grew dramatically, but the appetite for chaos never completely disappeared. Here’s what happened on August 8 throughout the Rolling Stones’ remarkable live history.
August 8, 1964: The Kurhaus, Scheveningen, first Stones’ show ever in the Netherlands, and also their first on the European continent besides the UK).The thrilled young crowd at the Kurhaus went wild, breaking furniture during the show. The chaos halted after ten minutes. Unlike the Beatles’ calmer visit months earlier, this gig turned frenzied—chairs flew, and Charlie Watts dodged glass that injured a backstage technician.
