Today in Rolling Stones history: August 20
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
August 20 is one of those dates in Rolling Stones history that refuses to behave like a quiet day. From the release of (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction in 1965 to major tours, unexpected collaborations, and Bill Wyman turning up on other artists’ projects, the timeline gets surprisingly crowded. Brian Jones appears alongside Nico, Wyman and Charlie Watts join Howlin’ Wolf, , and the Stones storm stages from Toronto to Twickenham. There’s even an Angie/Silver Train single hiding some fascinating stories behind two very different songs. In other words, August 20 has plenty going on.
August 20, 1963: Ricky Tick Club, Thames Hotel, Windsor, England
Aug. 20, 1964: New Theatre Ballroom, Guernsey, Channel Islands, England
August 20, 1965: Release of the (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction / The Spider and the Fly 7″ single in England (Decca F 12220)
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction captured frustration, alienation, sexual tension and consumer culture through Keith Richards’ unforgettable fuzz-driven riff. Reharding The Spider and the Fly, it offered a slower, swampy blues tale, with Mick Jagger portraying a confident predator who encounters a woman clever enough to turn the tables, leaving him caught in his own web.

August 20, 1965: Release of Nico’s 7″ single I’m Not Sayin’ / The Last Mile, with Brian Jones on guitar on side B
Nico’s debut solo 7-inch single, released on Andrew Loog Oldham’s Immediate Records, featured an impressive lineup of future rock royalty. The A-side, I’m Not Sayin’, was a Gordon Lightfoot cover produced by Oldham with Brian on guitar. As for the B-side, The Last Mile, it was co-written, arranged and produced by Jimmy Page.

August 20, 1971: Release of Howlin Wolf’s LP The London Howlin’ Wolf Sessions, with Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and Ian Stewart as guests
Recorded in London in May 1970, The London Howlin’ Wolf Sessions brought Chicago blues legend Howlin’ Wolf together with a remarkable lineup of rock musicians. Producer Norman Dayron conceived the project to unite blues pioneers with younger artists who idolized them. Recorded mainly at Olympic Studios, the sessions featured Eric Clapton, Hubert Sumlin, Wyman, Watts and Steve Winwood, with additional appearances by Ringo Starr and Klaus Voormann.

August 20, 1973: Release of the Angie / Silver Train 7″ single (Rolling Stones Records RS 19105)
Angie is an acoustic-driven ballad about the painful end of a romance. Written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger, it combines Richards’ melancholy guitar chords with Jagger’s sorrowful lyrics. Richards developed the song while undergoing heroin detox in Switzerland in 1972, while the meaning and origin of the name “Angie” remain debated.
Regarding Silver Train, also released on the 1973 album Goats Head Soup, it’s a blues-rock track which tells the story of a fleeting encounter with a prostitute aboard a southbound train. Its gritty, bluesy atmosphere adds a darker edge to the album.
