Today in Rolling Stones history: January 25
*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present
January 25 is a surprisingly loaded date in Rolling Stones history, tracing the band’s journey from dark, makeshift clubs to global stadiums and cultural crossovers. From their raw first-ever show at the Ricky Tick Club in Windsor in 1963 to early UK gigs, key releases, world tours, legendary collaborations, and late-night New York encounters, this day captures the Stones in constant motion. It’s a snapshot of evolution: blues apprentices becoming rock survivors, sharing stages with soul legends, pop icons, and even tennis rebels. One date, multiple decades, endless proof that the Rolling Stones never stood still.
January 25, 1963: The day of the Stones’ first-ever show at the Ricky Tick Club inside the Star and Garter Hotel in Windsor, Berkshire—a tiny, gritty room that felt more like an underground bunker than a proper venue. They’d play there many times later. The walls were reportedly painted completely black to kill any sense of polish, and the lighting was improvised from old ice-cream tins, throwing harsh, moody shadows across the band. It was raw, loud, and unglamorous, perfectly matching the blues-heavy sound they were just beginning to shape. No stage spectacle, no safety net—just five young musicians grinding it out in a dark room, laying the groundwork for everything that would follow.

January 25, 1983: Keith Richards attends Tina Turner’s explosive show at The Ritz in New York, soaking up the raw power and charisma that defined her live performances in that era. After the set, he heads backstage, where the night turns into a perfect snapshot of New York’s cultural crossover: Tina, still buzzing from the stage; David Bowie, sharp and curious as ever; journalist Lisa Robinson, capturing the moment; and tennis firebrand John McEnroe, fresh from the sports world but right at home in the rock ’n’ roll chaos. It’s a loose, late-night gathering where music, fame, and attitude collide, the kind of scene that could only happen in New York (all photos by Bob Gruen)
