July 14, 1963: Ken Colyer Jazz Club, Studio 51, London, England
The Ken Colyer Jazz Club, located at 51 Great Newport Street in London’s Soho, played a key role in the British jazz and blues scene during the early 1960s. Originally named the London Jazz Club, it was renamed after Ken Colyer, a traditional jazz trumpeter and bandleader who was a major figure in the UK’s Dixieland revival. The club became a vital meeting point for young musicians who were passionate about American blues and R&B.

In 1962, Alexis Korner and Cyril Davies launched their influential group, Blues Incorporated, at the club. Their performances introduced electric blues to a new generation—and directly inspired the formation of The Rolling Stones. It was at the Ken Colyer Club where Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Brian Jones first came together with a shared love for the blues. Richards later recalled seeing Cyril Davies’ wild harmonica playing as a revelation. The club’s short but powerful existence helped ignite the British blues boom and indirectly launched one of rock’s most iconic bands.
