March 9 has a special place in Rolling Stones history. From intimate early gigs at the Wooden Bridge Hotel, Guildford (1963) and Odeon Theatre, Sunderland (1965) to the gritty, unforgettable Colston Hall shows in Bristol (1971), these nights capture the band at defining moments of their UK tours. That Bristol run was one of their last England shows before becoming tax exiles and recording Exile on Main St. in France—a turning point in Stones lore. Fast forward to 1995 in Tokyo and 2014 in Macau, and you see a band still unstoppable, delivering classics like Jumpin’ Jack Flash and Satisfaction to fans across the globe.

In 1971, The Rolling Stones hit the road for a short but wild UK tour before heading to France to escape tax issues. One of those legendary nights went down at Colston Hall in Bristol on March 4. It was an intimate venue for the Stones, who were already megastars, and the crowd got a raw, no-frills rock ‘n’ roll show. This tour was also the last time the Stones played England before becoming tax exiles. Just weeks later, they’d relocate to France, where they’d record Exile on Main St. and take their music (and mayhem) to another level. For those lucky enough to be at Colston Hall that night, it was pure rock history. The Stones were at their peak—gritty, untouchable, and about to change the game once again.
