May 28, 1969: Mick and Marianne Faithfull are arrested at their Cheyne Walk apartment for possession of cannabis. They are later brought to court, charged and released on bail. The bust added another chapter to the ongoing scrutiny the Rolling Stones faced from law enforcement and the press during the late 1960s, mostly from 1967 onwards. This time both Jagger and Faithfull were taken into custody and subsequently brought to court, where they were formally charged. After a brief appearance, the couple was released on bail. The incident further fueled the media frenzy surrounding the Stones and their countercultural lifestyle, reinforcing their image as rebellious figures in the rock ‘n’ roll world. While not their first legal issue, the arrest underscored the tension between British authorities and rock musicians during that era. The case continued in court proceedings afterward, attracting widespread attention from fans and critics alike, and highlighting the cultural divide between generations and societal norms.
