October 11 gives the Rolling Stones plenty of reasons to turn up the volume, from early British theatre dates to stadium-sized spectacles on both sides of the Atlantic. The band plays Essen in 1973, tears through Los Angeles in 1981, and brings the Steel Wheels juggernaut to New York in 1989. But the date also reveals a quieter connection: Keith Richards joins country singer George Jones for a session that puts Nashville tradition and Stones swagger in the same room. Add the release of Doom and Gloom in 2012, and October 11 proves rock history rarely sticks to one script.

Doom and Gloom serves as the lead single from the Stones’ 50th-anniversary compilation GRRR!. Written primarily by Mick Jagger and produced by Don Was, this hard-driving rock track mixes apocalyptic imagery, zombie-filled swamps, crashing airplanes, oil fracking and overseas wars. Beneath its dark blues-rock attack and grim view of modern society, however, the song delivers a defiant message: keep moving, keep dancing, and refuse to surrender.
