October 14 offers a glimpse of the Rolling Stones beyond the stage, from Charlie Watts’s quietly celebrated marriage to Shirley Shepherd in 1964 to performances spanning five decades. While Charlie keeps his wedding out of the spotlight, the band fills venues from Birmingham and Rotterdam to Seattle, Las Vegas and Tokyo. The date also brings Brian Jones back into focus through the long-delayed release of The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, alongside the snarling romance of Don’t Stop and Ronnie Wood’s solo world. Add Desert Trip and a late-career stadium show, and October 14 proves the Stones never do ordinary.

October 14, 1964: Charlie Watts secretly marries Shirley Shepherd in Bradford, Yorkshire, keeping the ceremony away from the public attention surrounding the Rolling Stones. The couple, who met before the band reached international fame, chose a quiet civil wedding rather than a high-profile celebration. Their marriage, which lasted until Charlie’s death in 2021, remained one of the most enduring relationships in the Stones’ turbulent world. While the band’s fortunes changed dramatically over the decades, the couple built a private life largely outside rock ’n’ roll’s spotlight. Shirley would pass on December 16 2022, sixteen months after Charlie.

Recorded at Intertel Studios in Wembley on December 11–12 1968, The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus captures an ambitious television project that remained unreleased for decades. Conceived by Mick Jagger as a circus-themed musical extravaganza, it combines live performances with carnival spectacle. Finally releaswd almost 30 years later, the soundtrack preserve a particularly significant moment: the final public live performance of founding guitarist Brian Jones with the Stones, just eight months before his death.

The Don’t Stop lyrics portray a volatile romance where desire and suffering become difficult to separate. The singer recalls a lover whose passion turns physical, biting his lip until it bleeds and carving her name into his back with sharp nails. These vivid images capture a relationship leaving scars both physical and emotional, while memories unravel and her affection fades. Yet amid the hurt, danger and growing distance, the chorus keeps returning to one desperate plea: “don’t stop, baby, don’t stop”.

October 14, 2002: Release of Ronnie Wood’s DVD Far East Man
This captures theStones guitarist in concert at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire on Dec. 11 2001. The 112-minute DVD combines live performances with backstage footage, candid interviews and a gallery featuring 11 of Ronnie’s original paintings. The Ronnie Wood Band includes his son Jesse Wood, Leah Wood and Frankie Gavin, while special guests Slash, Andrea Corr and BP Fallon add extra star power. It’s a revealing look at Ronnie’s musical world beyond his duties with the Stones.

October 14, 2015: Release of the Live At The Tokyo Dome 2-CD + 2-DVD set
This documents a landmark concert on February 26, 199, when the band finally brought its live spectacle to Japan during the Steel Wheels World Tour. After years of visa restrictions kept the Stones out of the country, Tokyo welcomed them for a historic performance. The show also preserves one of the final major touring chapters featuring bassist Bill Wyman before his departure. Later restored for the From the Vault series, the footage features remixed audio by Bob Clearmountain.
