October 9, 1971: Release of The Master Musicians of Joujouka’s LP Brian Jones Presents The Pipes Of Pan At Joujouka (Rolling Stones Records COC 49100 US)

Released posthumously, Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka documents the hypnotic traditional music of Morocco’s Master Musicians of Joujouka. Recorded by the Rolling Stones founding member on July 29, 1968 in the Rif Mountains, the album captures trance-inducing percussion and piercing rhaita melodies. Guided by Brion Gysin and Mohamed Hamri, Jones recorded the musicians using portable equipment before adding psychedelic effects in London, introducing Western audiences to a remarkable musical tradition.

This is the show that before playing a single note opening act Prince and his androgynous style clashed hard with the macho blues-rock crowd. Bottles, cans, and slurs soon followed. Shaken and in tears, he flew home, ready to quit. But after calls from his team—and Mick Jagger himself—Prince returned, proving resilience beats rejection.

Bill Wyman’s Blues Odyssey is a 110-minute documentary exploring the roots and development of the blues, from its African origins and the Mississippi Delta to northern American cities and the British rhythm and blues explosion of the 1960s. Presented by actor Clarke Peters, the film draws on former Bill Wyman’s extensive research and personal experience. It follows black musicians migrating from the Deep South to cities such as Memphis, St. Louis and Chicago, tracing how their music evolved along the way. Wyman also revisits his own involvement in Britain’s early R&B scene. Featuring interviews and recollections from B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Sam Phillips, Mick Fleetwood, Otis Rush and Taj Mahal, the documentary connects blues history with rock’s wider musical heritage.
