Today in Rolling Stones history: October 12

*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present

October 12 finds the Rolling Stones navigating everything from British theatre dates to enormous American stadiums, but one moment takes the action away from the stage. In 1968, Mick Jagger faces a very different kind of audience on Frost on Saturday, debating marriage and relationships with moral campaigner Mary Whitehouse. Traditional values meet rock-star independence, and polite television gets considerably less predictable. Decades later, the band is still filling arenas, while the release of The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus finally brings its long-delayed 1968 spectacle to home video. Some performances take a little longer to arrive.

October 12, 1968: Mick appears on Frost on Saturday (British TV) where he discusses marriage and living out of wedlock with Mrs. Mary Whitehouse, founder of the National Viewers and Listeners Association. The conversation gets lively, with Jagger defending personal freedom and modern relationships while Whitehouse argues for traditional values, sparking one of the show’s most talked-about exchanges.

Filmed in a London studio transformed into a carnival, the production features Mick Jagger as ringmaster, surrounded by clowns, acrobats, fire-eaters and aerialists from Robert Fossett’s Circus, blending rock performances with genuine big-top spectacle.
