October 2 makes The Rolling Stones’ calendar look rather busier than anyone reasonably needs. The date jumps from early London shows to a surprisingly Stones-heavy detour through Andrew Loog Oldham’s 16 Hip Hits, where Keith Richards and Mick Jagger turn up in unexpected places. Then come Wigan, Ipswich and Hamburg, followed years later by Edmonton and Zurich, proving that this particular date never learned the meaning of “take it easy.” October 2, apparently, had plans.

October 2, 1963: Regal Theatre, Edmonton, London, England (2 shows)

October 2, 1964: Release of The Andrew Oldham Orchestra & Chorus’ LP 16 Hip Hits, with guests:
Keith Richards on Needles And Pins/ I Don’t Know What To Do With Myself/ I Want To Hold Your Hand/ You’re No Good
Mick Jagger on Da Doo Ron Ron, plus Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts and Stu (unconfirmed)

Released by Decca, 16 Hip Hits is a 40-minute pop-rock and lounge collection from The Andrew Oldham Orchestra & Chorus, the studio project assembled by Andrew Loog Oldham, then manager and producer of the Stones. The album transforms major hits and contemporary pop favorites of the era into instrumental and choral arrangements, giving familiar songs a polished orchestral treatment. It captures Oldham’s fascination with reimagining current pop music through a distinctly mid-1960s studio sound, long before such reinterpretations became a familiar part of pop culture.
