September 25 is hardly a quiet date in Rolling Stones history. It brings two U.S. singles, major tour openings, packed stadium shows, and a rather unexpected Don Henley connection involving Mick Jagger. From Time Is on My Side and Get Off of My Cloud to Philadelphia in 1981, the Stones keep finding ways to make this date unusually busy. There are also stops in Switzerland, Washington, Columbia, Chicago, Benidorm, and Liverpool, proving that the calendar apparently never learned when to leave them alone. And then there’s Don Henley’s Cass County, where Mick turns up as a guest, because apparently one rock band’s history is never complicated enough.

September 25, 1963: Eel Pie Island, Twickenham, England

September 25, 1964: Release of the Time Is On My Side / Congratulations 7″ single in the USA (London 9708)
The Stones’ version of Time Is on My Side captures a calm confidence in love, with the narrator certain that a wandering partner will eventually return. Rather than pleading, he trusts that time will prove him right. Written by Jerry Ragovoy (as Norman Meade), the song was first recorded by Kai Winding in 1963.
Regarding Congratulations, it’s a cynical allad that delivers sarcastic praise to a serial heartbreaker. The narrator mocks his reputation for manipulating women while confidently declaring that their own partner remains immune to his charms. It’s a sly, defiant response to someone accustomed to getting exactly what he wants.

September 25, 1965: Release of the Get Off of My Cloud / I’m Free 7″ single in the USA (London 9792)
Get Off of My Cloud is a defiant anthem capturing the frustration of sudden fame and societal intrusion. Through a series of annoying, everyday disruptions, the narrator fiercely demands privacy, utilizing his “cloud” as a metaphor for mental solitude.
As for I’m Free, it’s a rebellious folk-rock track celebrating individual autonomy. Shifting from rhythm-and-blues, the Rolling Stones deliver a carefree counterculture anthem, using the central declaration to assert personal liberty and a defiance of any social or romantic constraints.

Mick Jagger about getting it together again (1982): “We hadn’t toured for three years so going back on the road did feel a little strange. We had to rehearse for a long time. I was a bit nervous at first because we went straight from doing one club gig to Philadelphia, which is in front of all those people. Yeah, I was a little nervous until I got on the stage and realized that although it was a little sloppy we got away with it. I knew we could be together, the audience was with us and we were going to have a good time. It took us a few gigs to get with it – like… five, which were all HUGE gigs (laughs). There was one in Buffalo, there were two in Philly, all over. But it was pretty difficult the first week, fair enough to say.”
