September 30 has a surprisingly crowded Rolling Stones calendar, jumping from small British gigs to Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Winnipeg, and Charlotte. Along the way, Ronnie Wood turns up on Marsha Hunt’s Woman Child, Charlie Watts and Stu join Pete Townshend and Ronnie Lane, and Keith Richards wanders into Tom Waits’ strange New York world on Rain Dogs. Then there’s Forty Licks, neatly packaging four decades of Stones history—because apparently 40 tracks were enough to pretend this band could ever be summarized. Not even close. And yes, there were plenty more Stones moments hiding behind the date.

September 30, 1963: Rex Ballroom, Cambridge, England (extracurricular gig)

September 30, 1965: Gaumont Theatre, Hanley, England (2 shows)

September 30, 1966: Odeon Theatre, Glasgow, Scotland, 2 shows (The Rolling Stones British Tour 1966)

September 30, 1971: Release of Marsha Hunt’s LP Woman Child, with Ronnie as guest (on bass) on three tracks: 1. Desdemona (rumoured)/ 2. Keep The Customer Satisfied (rumoured)/ 3. Wild Thing
The album blends rock, blues, soul, funk, and heartfelt ballads into a varied musical set. It also includes adventurous versions of songs by Dr. John, Traffi, and The Supremes. Among the original material, Marc Bolan contributed and produced tracks such as Hot Rod Pappa.

September 30, 1973: Festhalle, Frankfurt, West Germany, 2 shows (The Rolling Stones European Tour 1973)

September 30, 1977: Release of Pete Townshend & Ronnie Lane’s LP Rough Mix, with Charlie and Stu as guests on two tracks: 1. My Baby Gives It Away/ 2. Catmelody
Rough Mix began as a planned solo project for Lane, with Townshend attached as producer. It ultimately became a collaborative effort shaped by their long friendship, shared devotion to Meher Baba, and close ties as neighbors.

September 30, 1985: Release of Tom Waits’ LP Rain Dogs, with Keith as guest on three tracks: 1. Big Black Mariah/ 2. Union Square/ 3. Blind Love
Rain Dogs is a loose concept record centered on New York City’s outsiders, drifters, and forgotten characters. Its songs draw from Weimar cabaret, Kurt Weill, New Orleans jazz, maritime ghost tales, and gritty blues. Guitarist Marc Ribot delivers distinctive, jagged leads, while Keith Richards appears on nothing but three tracks!

September 30, 2002: Release of the Forty Licks 2-CD compilation
Forty Licks is the first comprehensive Stones compilation to unite their early 1960s Decca/London recordings, licensed through ABKCO, with material from their post-1971, self-owned Rolling Stones Records catalog. The collection spans four decades and contains 40 essential tracks, plus four previously unreleased studio recordings: Don’t Stop, Keys to Your Love, Stealing My Heart and Losing My Touch, giving fans a mix of classics and new material.
