August 29 has a surprisingly crowded place in Rolling Stones history. From a couple of early gigs in Torquay to Mick Jagger turning up on a wonderfully strange Dr. John album, Keith Richards getting loose with Alexis Korner, and Aretha Franklin giving Jumpin’ Jack Flash a soul makeover, the Stones’ story keeps taking unexpected detours. Then came Steel Wheels, a reunion disguised as an album, before later tour stops in Rotterdam, Wembley, and Cardiff. Apparently, August 29 never got the memo about taking things quietly.

August 29, 1964: Town Hall, Torquay, England (2 shows)

August 29, 1971: Release of Dr. John’s LP The Sun, Moon & Herbs, with Mick Jagger as guest on one track: ‘Where Ya At Mule’ (backing vocals)
The fourth studio album by New Orleans musician Dr. John (Mac Rebennack), The Sun, Moon & Herbs combines swampy voodoo mysticism, Cajun folklore, and gritty bayou funk. Originally planned as an ambitious triple-LP, Atlantic/Atco reduced it to a 39-minute single album, a decision Dr. John reportedly disliked. Its dark, hypnotic sound features Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, P.P. Arnold, and The Memphis Horns.

August 29, 1975: Release of Alexis Korner’s 7″ single Get Off Of My Cloud / Strange N’Deranged, with Keith Richards as guest (guitar and vocals) on side A
Both tracks were taken from Alexis’ star-studded “super-session” album Get Off Of My Cloud. The A-side, which gave the album its title, offers a bluesy, high-profile reinterpretation of the Stones classic, with Keith sharing vocals alongside Peter Frampton, Steve Marriott and Nicky Hopkins. Rather than closely copying the original, the performance embraces a loose, spirited 1970s rock-jam atmosphere.

August 29, 1986: Release of Aretha Franklin’s Jumpin’ Jack Flash 7″ and 12″ singles, with Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood as guests
Aretha recorded her energetic, soul-driven version of the song for Penny Marshall’s 1986 comedy film of the same name, starring Whoopi Goldberg. Her powerful remake of the Stones classic plays over the closing credits. The recording also features Keith and Ronnie on guitar, with Richards also serving as producer.

August 29, 1989: Release of Steel Wheels, the Stones’ 19th British and 21st American studio album

Steel Wheels marked a significant reunion between Mick Jagger and Keith Richards after years of friction and separate solo careers. The album restored the Stones’ classic, guitar-led rock sound following the less successful Dirty Work, while also serving as Bill Wyman’s final full-length studio album with the band. It produced hits including Mixed Emotions, Rock and a Hard Place and Almost Hear You Sigh, while showcasing variety through rockers like Sad Sad Sad and the Moroccan-influenced Continental Drift.
