October 24 brings birthdays, courtroom drama, and a reminder that life as a Rolling Stone rarely followed a predictable script. Bill Wyman was born in South London in 1936, long before his bass lines became part of the band’s musical identity. In 1978, Keith Richards faced a Toronto judge whose ruling offered a chance to continue treatment and required a benefit concert, only for prosecutors to demand prison instead. Years later, Live at the Max brought the Stones’ stadium spectacle into cinemas and living rooms. Even their history refuses to stay neatly between the lines.

Born William George Perks on October 24, 1936 in Lewisham Hospital, Lewisham, South London, England, Bill grew up in a working-class family during wartime Britain. He developed an early love for music, teaching himself piano and later bass guitar, which would lead him to join The Rolling Stones in 1962, shaping rock history.

October 24, 1978: At the New Court House in Toronto the judge sentences Keith Richards to one year of probation, provided he continues his heroin addiction treatment, and orders him to perform a benefit concert for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind within six months. The decision is inspired by Rita Bédard, a blind teenage fan from Montreal who attended the trial. However, the Crown appeals the sentence, demanding that Keith be imprisoned.

Keith Richards, on his sentence: “I feel very good about it obviously, you know. I think it’s fair. Slightly strange. I mean, why not? It gives me a chance to carry on with what I’ve been doing for the past 18 months, which is kicking the habit, etc. I don’t think it was Canada’s fault or that it had anything to do with it. It could’ve happened anywhere. Mind you, you should do something about those Mounties (laughs)”

Rolling Stones: Live at the Max brings the band’s 1990 Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle Tour to the big screen with larger-than-life spectacle. This feature-length concert film combines towering stage sets, theatrical props, and unusually intimate close-ups, placing viewers amid the stadium crowd or practically beside Mick Jagger and the band. From inflatable floozies during Honky Tonk Women to wild dogs in Street Fighting Man, subtlety clearly wasn’t on the production team’s agenda.
