Today in Rolling Stones history: October 3

*Click for DAILY ROLLING STONES CHRONOLOGY 1962-present

October 3 packs an unusually wide slice of Rolling Stones history into one date. The journey runs from packed British theatres and a 1970 European tour stop in Lyon to Boulder in 1981, Foxboro, Washington and Copenhagen. Then there’s Keith Richards stepping outside the Stones with Talk Is Cheap, plus a secret 2016 Las Vegas performance for Freightliner truckers. It’s a timeline filled with major tours, unexpected detours and one particularly intriguing solo chapter. For Stones fans, October 3 offers plenty to uncover, proving that sometimes the most interesting stories sit between the headline events.

Talk Is Cheap emerged from a turbulent period with the Stones. Keith’s strained relationship with Mick Jagger and uncertainty over the band’s future pushed him toward a solo project he had never originally wanted. Recording in places including Canada offered a welcome creative escape. Musically, the album stayed firmly rooted in Keith’s strengths, blending blues, soul, rock and roll, and funk. Rather than chasing polished 1980s production, it leans on natural grooves, swinging rhythms, and the warmth of real instruments.
