Before it became hailed as one of the “50 Greatest Concerts of the Last 50 Years,” the Rolling Stones’ 1969 US Tour marked a dramatic comeback. After a three-year absence fueled by drug charges and setbacks, the band returned not to screaming teens in small halls, but to sold-out arenas packed with focused, mature fans. Mick Taylor, newly replacing the late Brian Jones, stepped into his first full tour after only one Hyde Park gig. With powerful amplification, Chip Monck’s lighting, and support from icons like Ike & Tina Turner and B.B. King, the tour quickly became rock legend.

Before it roared into the United States, Hurricane Hugo had already carved a brutal path through the Caribbean, striking Guadeloupe, Saint Croix, and Puerto Rico with major hurricane force. Born from a cluster of Cape Verde thunderstorms on September 10, 1989, the system rapidly evolved into a powerful Category 5 beast, reaching terrifying 160 mph winds by September 15. When it slammed into South Carolina days later, Hugo left widespread destruction, ultimately becoming the costliest cyclone in history at the time. By the time it transitioned into an extratropical system on September 23, 61 lives and billions were lost.
